Access

The only way in and out of the park is via boat on the lake. The speedboats take between 4 and 6 hours from Kigoma to reach the park while timber boats can take up to 15 hours

Characteristic

1 613 km2; A peninsula that juts out into Lake Tanganyika. The terrain is mostly rugged and hilly. Mountain range of the Mahale Mountains (773 – 2 460 m) runs from the northwest to the southeast across the park. Typical ecosystems: woodlands, lowland rain forest, mountain cloud forest, freshwater ecosystems. Mozaic eco-zone - mixture of west- and east-African fauna and flora.

Possible activities

Mahale Mountains

Trekking (exception among the African parks) - park must be experienced by foot, lots of pathways, there are no roads. Long walking trips can be arranged for viewing big game. These safaris may require up to 7 days.

Mountain climbing, snorkelling, swimming, kayaking and relaxing on deserted, pristine, white, sandy beaches.

Best time to visit V-X

Remote national park; it is said to be one of the most beautiful national parks in Africa

There are no roads or other infrastructure within the park boundaries.

Conservation of indigenous fish of Lake Tanganyika: no fishing (except under special licence) is permitted within 1.6 km of the shore line
