Characteristic
7927 km2; Mostly mountainous area of Bukit Barisan mountain range. The park is about 150 km long, over 100 km wide. The highest point is Gunung Leuser, which is 3,381 m high. Northern part of the area is mountainous with steep slopes and higher than 1500 m. There are 11 peaks are over 2,700 m. The Alas river valley cuts the park into an eastern and western parts. A narrow strip of the park runs down the coast. One of the richest tropical rain forests in Southeast Asia. Typical ecosystems: Primary and secondary rain forest, volcanic biotopes, freshwater ecosystems, mountain forest, alpine biotopes, wetlands, mangroves, coastal biotopes.
