Access

By boat from Padang - 10 hours

Characteristic

1905 km2; 47 % of the total Siberut Island area (mostly western part), located west of Sumatra. Hilly island - altitude 0-500 m. The east coast is slowly subsiding and as a result has a very irregular coastline of bays and islets. By contrast, the west coast is relatively straight and lined with broad sandy beaches and steep cliffs. Unique ecosystems developed by isolation for over 500,000 years from mainland of Sumatra. High level of endemism of plant and animal species. Typical ecosystems: rain forest (often primary one) - approx. 60% of the park area, freshwater ecosystems, wetlands, mangroves up to 2 km inland, coral reefs around the island.

Swimming, snorkelling, diving, surfing, forest trekking, canoeing, visit to the indigenous inhabitants.

Note

Population of indigenous inhabitants seems to be a relic of the Neolithic socio-political structure.

There is no touristic facilities in the island.

Biosphere reserve of UNESCO.
