Localization
Central part of South Island, New Zealand - between Christchurch and the West Coast.
Access
Easy. By car along the State Highway 73 from Christchurch directly to the park.
Characteristic
1 144 km2; A rugged and mountainous area straddling the main divide of the Southern Alps with large scree slopes and steep gorges. Mountains are generally below 2000 m. The highest point is Mount Murchison at 2,400 metres. The park is very distinctly split by the main divide of the South Island - dry beech/tawhai forest in the east, luxuriant rainforest on western slopes. Typical ecosystems: temperate zone forests, mountainous and alpine ecosystems, freshwater ecosystems (plenty of rivers).
