Localization
Eastern part of Central Sri Lanka, close to Ampara, 314 km east of Colombo.
Access
Easy - along the road from Ampara. Crossing the Senanayake Samudraya by boat from Inginiyagala is an alternative method of accessing the National Park.
Characteristic
630 km2; Forested and rocky area situated below the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka. The elevation of the park varies from 30 m to about 900 m. Important river Gal Oya and three smaller rivers flow through the park. Large artificial water tank (dam) inside the park boundaries. An important feature of the Gal Oya National Park is its elephant herd that can be seen throughout the year. Typical ecosystems: mixed evergreen forest (about 45% park area), grasslands (about 30%) and freshwater ecosystems.

Best time to visit III-VII
Many historical monuments in the park area. Thousands of pilgrims visit Dighavapi stupa annually which is also situated in the area.
